Outside, the sky had completely collapsed into a heavy deluge. Dense, ink-black clouds smothered the night, swallowing the moon whole as low rumbles of thunder rolled across the horizon. Every few seconds, jagged lightning split the dark, casting a stark, fleeting flash through the high window of the small room before plunging it back into shadows.
